BACKGROUND

Imagination & Creative Exploration

Imagination & Creative Exploration

Imagination & Creative Exploration

The FigBuild Competition challenged us to imagine waking up with a superpower that helps us tackle a major personal challenge. To harness its full potential and prevent it from becoming overwhelming or chaotic, we were asked to design a toolkit to support it.

CHALLENGES

1

1

Identify the Problem

Describe a personal pain point, such as something frustrating, inefficient, or challenging in daily life.

2

2

Imagine the Superpower

Invent a superpower that would solve this problem.

3

3

Design the Toolkit

Design a toolkit to help manage and master the superpower effectively.

4

4

Explore the Edge Cases

Consider potential edge cases and how the toolkit could help navigate them.

PROBLEM

Forgotten Moments, Forgotten Self

Forgotten Moments, Forgotten Self

Forgotten Moments, Forgotten Self

Did you know? The average person processes over 6,000 thoughts per day. No wonder so many details slip away. We often forget the skills we’ve learned, the warm moments we’ve experienced, and the creative ideas we once had.

SUPERPOWER

Memory, Revisited

Memory, Revisited

Memory, Revisited

What if you had a superpower that lets you revisit memories when you've forgotten them in the moment you need them most?

TOOLKIT

Winks

Winks

Winks

Winks is a toolkit designed to help you master your superpower — the ability to capture, organize, and revisit memories. By supporting this superpower, Winks helps you recall important moments you've forgotten when you need them most, while also freeing your mind for higher-order thinking and the present moment.

How Winks Works

How Winks Works

Before we dive in, here are the three core features of how Winks works for you:

Revisit Memories, View Reflections, and Tracker.

HIGH FIDELITY

Revisit Memories

Revisit Memories

Revisit Memories

Use the Indexing and Memory Disk to find the memory you want to revisit.

Now, you can walk through the chosen memory, pausing, rewinding, or fast-forwarding at your own pace. You can also step away at any time.

After revisiting a memory, Winks invites you to share your reflections guided by a few gentle prompts. These reflections form your growth timeline: a personal archive of insight, not just experience.

View Reflections

View Reflections

Winks lets you revisit your past reflections for moments when you need a reminder, insight, or simply a look at how far you’ve come.

Efficiency Panel

Efficiency Panel

Efficiency Panel

The Efficiency Panel tracks measurable outcomes like improvements in skills and cognitive capacity, helping you recognize how your superpower shapes your personal growth. By making this progress visible, Winks naturally motivates intentional revisits and prevents passive overuse, leading to healthier and more mindful use of this ability.

Memory Panel

Memory Panel

Memory Panel

The Memory Panel visualizes the percentage of memories in three categories based on revisit frequency. “Fresh Memories” is newly captured. “Memories Revisited” has been accessed once. “Reflection Memories” is revisited twice, which is the maximum allowed before it becomes inaccessible. This limitation helps prevent emotional dependency and encourages growth by guiding you forward, rather than keeping you stuck in the past.

Revisit Log

Revisit Log

Revisit Log

The Revisit Log organizes memories by how often they've been revisited. "Cooldown" marks memories you've accessed once, with a waiting period before you can return. This encourages reflection before diving back in. "Locked" memories are those visited twice and now inaccessible, but you can still revisit the reflections from those moments to continue learning and growing.

Token Panel

Token Panel

Token Panel

The Tokens Panel shows how many Memory Tokens you’ve used and how to earn more. Since revisiting memories requires Tokens and they’re limited, this encourages mindful use of your superpower and helps prevent overdependence. You’ll receive new Tokens each year on your birthday, with chances to earn bonus Tokens through meaningful tasks.

EDGE CASES

Careful

Careful

Even superpowers come with risks. What if you dive in too often, or linger too long in emotional memories? Remember the cooldowns and limits we mentioned earlier? Winks uses them, along with other safeguards, to protect you and gently guide you toward healthier, more mindful use.

Addiction to Revisiting

Addiction to Revisiting

Addiction to Revisiting

Too much time in the past can dim the present. Some may overuse the superpower as an escape or grow too dependent on reliving what’s already passed.

To encourage healthy use, Winks limits each person to 48 Memory Tokens per year. Each memory can also only be revisited twice. These boundaries are designed to prevent dependency and keep reflection intentional.

Traumatic Tagging

Traumatic Tagging

Some memories blur with time. When users unintentionally revisit traumatic or triggering moments, they may step into what still aches.

Winks includes biometric trauma detection, such as monitoring heart rate spikes. When triggered, the memory is gently blocked and users are prompted to enter Safe Mode.

Consent in Shared Memories

Consent in Shared Memories

Consent in Shared Memories

Our lives are deeply intertwined with others. People may appear in each other’s memories without ever giving their consent, raising potential ethical and legal concerns.

Introduce privacy flags to help users set boundaries around memories involving others. This ensures that revisiting remains both ethical and consensual, protecting the privacy of everyone who may appear in those moments.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Creativity & Imagination

Creativity & Imagination

Creativity & Imagination

This was my first time joining a Designathon, and my first time facing a challenge to design for something that lived only in imagination — a superpower. For four days, ideas sparked like fireflies, and time rushed past in a blur of pressure and bursts of joy. I felt both challenged and alive, each step pulling me deeper into the story we were creating. When it ended, the journey left its mark: our team emerged as the top winner of the FigBuild School Prize at Parsons.

Emphasis on Human–AI Collaboration

Emphasis on Human–AI Collaboration

This project explores the potential of human–AI collaboration by integrating insights derived through artificial intelligence. AI tools were used to support research, refine expression, and enhance clarity, always guided by human intention. The outcomes are grounded in speculative design and reflect a balance where AI assists creativity rather than replaces human insight.
